In this post we'll look at the difference between Wix and
WordPress. We have categories to use for
comparison. They'll be cost ease of use design flexibility and ecommerce. So
price and cost.
With Wix the basic builder is free but it adds Wix branded
ads on the top and bottom of your site. The second issue is you can't have your
own custom domain with the free version.
Now for WordPress the software itself is free but you do need
to purchase hosting and your own domain to set up your site.
So depending on your budget you can either go with something
as low as $3 a month to something like Hostbora which costs $2.3 a month.
Also if you use a premium WordPress theme then that could
add to your initial cost but there are several great looking free themes to
choose from.
In our conclusion WordPress beats Wix in flexible hosting
plans.
Our next category is ease of use.
Wix comes with a great drag and drop interface to build your
site with and rearrange things on your pages like write content and add media. With
WordPress it has a visual editor to write your content with and has a theme
customizer to let you edit your theme properties but it does not have a drag
and drop functionality
So Wix is the winner for ease of use.
On design and layout Wix has several templates to choose
from whereas with WordPress has thousands of free and paid themes you can
choose from. If you purchased a premium theme then you also have premium
support with them.
With this category WordPress wins over Wix.
Now for extending the functionality you can add plugins and
apps to both of your sites. With Wix you have several apps that you can add the
functionality to your site.
Most of these apps are free or have a lite version and with
WordPress you have thousands of plugins
to extend your site's functionality. The thought has always been that anything
you can think of for your site WordPress probably has a plugin to fit that
need. Because of this WordPress wins in this category.
Finally let's look at ecommerce.
With Wix you can have an ecommerce store with their paid
plans only you can only accept payments using paypal or authorize.net. To sell
online you'll have to pay extra for third party apps for selling online.
And with WordPress you have several free plugins that you
can use to build your online store also the accept payments via several payment
processors with dedicated themes designed specifically for online selling.
WordPress wins in this category.
With WordPress winning in most categories we've looked at,
WordPress is the clearly the winner in this comparison.
